I'm very curious as to the reliability of the electric ones.

I've wanted louder exhaust ever since I got my new car & now I finally have a paid internship (YAY!). So I think I'm going to do it in a few weeks/months, but honestly I have no problem climbing under and bolting on the covers for the cheaper versions. Just curious if the electric ones are worth it.

Kinja'd!!!

& what the car would sound like afterwards if anyone is curious.

I'm def curious about all affordable methods to open up the exhaust on the highway

I'm glad this exists and wasn't some concept I made up in my mind. What is your internship as?

That. Sounds. Meeeeeeeaaaaaan.

The only plus I see is being able to put them back while in the car. So if you were driving through a town or something, you wouldn't have to stop to put them back on.

But as a muscle car guy, I'm all for old school :)

Edit: also, I think there was a general cable version somewhere for cars, or it wouldn't be too hard to make

I'm glad too. But I actually won a design competition for a scooter and now I get to bring it into production with the company. I know a scooter isn't the coolest, but hey there will be one on the road I designed.

Not really a fan of the 370z w/ fartcans that produces. FYI the street term for these is "dumpers".

Didn't know about the cable version, also interested in that. I'm with you actually on wanting it open all the time though. My old car just had cut exhaust and I LOVED it. But it got tiring on long car drives, which is why I'm thinking cutouts this time.

They're a start up EV scooter company. So far they have been using a crap asian design because it was cheap for engineering. But they're excited to get their scooter out in the world, and I'm excited to get something I've designed out in the world.

Pretty stoked.

That's awesome man. Congratulations on having your design accepted. Got any pictures of the design? (if you are at liberty of sharing them of course...)

First off, thats a Crossfire in the video …. unless your car is a Z and I miss understood.

But call them dumpers, gotcha. Will do from now on.

Lol I actually got a email from them today (err yesterday) saying NOT to share my design, otherwise I totally would.

But thanks!

Looks like they can be low as $55 per side depending on diameter, though, you might have to do a bit of fabricating for the lever-thingy:

One of my friends has the manual ones on his grand national, sounds wicked with them open.

You have 4 options

Manual

Cable

Electric-butterfly

Electric- rotating gate

Manual - the only gripe is having to get under the car and unbolt it manually

Cable - Do you really want to cut holes in your floor and run cables? Thats some ghetto ass shit

Electric butterfly - this is the most common one. I've heard that over time they'll also develop leaks

Electric gate - these are the newest design, they are also not supposed to leak due to how they are designed. It swings a plate in front of the hole, covering the whole hole up. Instead of a butterfly that shuts a plate inside the hole.

perhaps mounting the cable right under the driver door could be a way of not having to put a hole through your car, but you wouldn't actually have to get out of the car to activate it, just open the door and reach down. Would probably have to devise some sort of cover for it if you drive in winter quite a bit.

I think these are great! I'd like to put one in my ST but the tunes are still being developed (there's less backpressure when it's open). If your car is NA then it shouldn't be a problem reliablity wise.

lol, crossfire.

I've always wanted to make something like this for my '2...but I think eventually I'll end up turbo'd and do an open dump from the blow-off.

I think they are working on one for the refresh, but they are hush hush about that right now.

"newest design" almost always means most expensive too. But my big take away from this is that the electric ones develop leaks. Since I'll be switching between loud and quiet so little I think Im leaning towards manual.

Thanks for the info.

Yep, I need to drown out the outside world ;) I just remembered that some people say the butterly valve may not seat properly after awhile.

from what i've read, an exhaust cutout is good for turbos - to a point. you want the least back pressure possible because you want exh flow through your turbo as fast as possible.

of course this brings with it tuning so you don't boost spike, which might mean an ewg

I'm very well aware that the car is a Crossfire, I test drove one with a friend back in 2008. But with those dumpers it sounds like a riced out 370z, of which I've seen and heard a few around where I live. I'm really not a fan of the Nissan V6 sound like in the GTR.

It's not that the electric ones develop leaks, that has nothing to do with it. The butterfly valve style are prone to leaking over time as they end up blowing slightly open. The best ones I have found are made by QTP with an offset in the hole that makes them want to stay shut. Doug's makes the sliding style which work great and seal all the way, but if they don't get used enough they will build up crud on them and get sticky. Also, cutouts usually end up hanging pretty low and if you so much as knick the Doug's, they won't function anymore - it's a plate sandwich where the middle piece slides, so if it isn't PERFECTLY aligned, no more movement.

I have probably installed 50-100 pairs of cutouts and have had plenty of experience with them. If it was on my own car just for screwing around now and then, QTPs. If you have a lot of room undercar for them and plan on opening them regularly, Dougs.
